Oats produce a mass of foliage that suppresses weeds and its fine bulky root system is great at improving soil structure. Oats are a great catch crop soaking up nutrient that may otherwise be lost over the winter and making them available for spring planting.

Sow between late summer and autumn, dig into the soil just prior to flowering and 6 weeks prior to re-planting.
