Description
Fiber Protect is a moist, highly digestible fibre feed comprising pure fresh-cut lucerne, ideal for all horses requiring top-quality fibre. It is the only feed product in New Zealand to be registered with ACVM to aid in the prevention and healing of gastric ulcers in horses.
A good source of calcium and other minerals, it also features high levels of digestible protein, lysine and other amino acids which together are essential for vital functions including growth, reproduction and immunity.
We recommend Fiber Protect when higher levels of digestible protein, essential amino acids and increased muscle development for better top-line condition are required. It can be fed on its own to either support pasture/hay feeding, as the primary forage, or together with grain/cereal-based concentrate feeds.
Fiber Protect is especially effective in helping avoid digestive discomfort and gastric disorders associated with grain/concentrate feeding and can help improve digestive function and gastric health in all horses.

Fiber Protect Feeding Recommendations
Fiber Protect can be fed on its own in the feed bowl or mixed with supplements. When introduced to the diet, increase daily amounts by 0.5kg increments until the desired quantity is reached.
We recommend feeding a minimum of 2kg per day, but there is no limit on how much Fiber Protect can be fed
When extra energy is required increase the amount of FiberProtect first. If even more energy is required in the form of concentrates or grain, only feed up to half the weight of FiberProtect in the diet, creating a healthy 2:1 ratio mixed; e.g. 2kg FiberProtect and 1kg concentrate in the feed bowl per meal. This ratio is ideal for buffering the stomach against excessive acidity caused by grain. It increases saliva production, slows intake, and increases digestion and metabolism of both the grain and fibre portions, all while maintaining healthy gut function and hydration.
Feeding Fiber Protect at the correct ratio increases the digestibility of concentrates by 20-30%, therefore the amount of hard feed can be reduced. How much to reduce this will depend on the individual horse and can be reviewed by regular body condition scoring and weighing.
Indicatively, most sport/race horses do best on 4-6kg of Fiber Protect per day in addition to added energy such as grains/concentrate feeds, and fat/oil.
