As a cover crop mustard provides excellent weed control and as a green manure crop it provides bulk organic matter to the soil that breaks down quickly. It also contains properties that help control some harmful soil fungi.
Sow mustard between spring and autumn, chop just prior to flowering and dig into the soil 6 weeks prior to re-planting.
Mustard belongs to the brassica family so they shouldn’t be used as a cover crop prior to planting other brassicas of any kind.
